The $718 donation will help farmers plant 1,436 trees, and rebuild their cacao and coffee tree farms, which were destroyed in the October disaster.

"It won't solve everything, but every little bit will help," said owner Sal Reina, whose shop recently expanded to Elmwood Park.

Reina was inspired to donate to the Root Project after he saw California-based chef Dominique Crenn's involvement. Reina's best friend's parents are from Haiti, and knowing they were somehow affected also hit home for him.

"It's food," Reina said. "It's farmers and peoples lives who were affected and in my heart I just wanted to help."
