RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Laurel LaPorta has found a way to express who she is by the styles she chooses. Her store in Rutherford, Vintage Living, offers others the chance to wear their personality on their sleeve.
Vintage Living could be described as an antique store, but LaPorta prefers to refer to the place as a collection of "memories."
The store is setup through color-coding, but the real connective thread between each item is their uniqueness.
Everything from stylish hunting jackets, quirky ashtrays, liquor glasses, old-fashioned silverware and everything in between is on display in her store.
LaPorta explained that she used to find unique items at flea markets or expos and use them to decorate her own living space. In the past, she's helped friends and family design their homes with items that pack a lot of personality.
Her sense of humor comes out in a lot of the items she shows interest in.
"The thing is to catch me off guard. That’s what a joke is supposed to do," LaPorta said.
Many of her items catch visitors off guard through their personable individuality.
"I thought everything in the place was awesome," Rutherford resident Lisa Rangel said.
Rangel discovered the store walking through Rutherford's busy Park Avenue and vowed to return.
Vintage Living is located at 6 Highland Cross in Rutherford.
