"Men don't pre-order," she said.

In the 10 years she's been in this spot, she's seen the same behavior time and time again. Though it doesn't bother her -- it just makes her Valentine's Day a bit "nuts."

Shafer, who has a background in both horticulture and in floral design, grew up in town and returned once she had kids (she previously had a floral shop in Hoboken). She said Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are her two biggest business days but February 14 is always a bit more chaotic. To prepare, she offers extended hours and orders literally thousands of roses, mostly red but some colors as well.

Her roses come direct from Ecuador, ensuring the utmost quality.

Those interested in pre-ordering can get one dozen long stem roses with lush greenery and accent flowers trimmed with a matching bow for $55 -- as long as you do this by Friday, Feb. 10.

A special 15 percent discount is available to all police, fire, military veterans and first responders. On Valentine's Day she will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Poppies Florist is at 18 Park Ave., (201), 531-1155, www.poppiesfloristnj.com/.
