It's also widely considered the unofficial start of campaign season, a time for politicians to get their volunteers lined up and hand-outs in order.
In Rutherford, as the oldest and largest street fair gears up for its 41st year, the Labor Day Street Fair is as much about hot dogs and antiques as it is about who's running for what.
Aside from the walking billboards of politicians, there also will be over 250 vendors lining the streets, parks, and plazas featuring antiques, collectibles, and craft vendors from all over the East Coast.
Last year the event attracted more than 35,000 people.
Cliffhanger Productions will bring its signature brand of entertainment to the festival with many activities to entertain kids. There will be rides and amusements, a children’s stage with a costumed character musical revue, magic show, balloon artists, and a variety of street performers.
Local restaurants will be out in force, along with some of the area’s nonprofit groups that are planning food-related fundraising.
Other area nonprofits will have booths to provide information, engage in fundraising, and recruit volunteers.
The Street Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Musical entertainment will be held at the Hutzel Memorial Band Shell in Rutherford’s Lincoln Park starting at 11 a.m.
There will be live music all day long beginning with local artist and radio personality Lise Avery and other local artists.
The headliner will be Bill Turner and the Blue Smoke Band who will play a set and will also be presenting Double Elvis Dynamite starring Elvis tribute artists Anthony Liguori and Bobby Memphis. Bill Turner is the last guitarist to play with Bill Haley and the Comets and the band plays a mix of classic rock n’ roll and country music.
The Art Association of Rutherford members will be selling their paintings on the lawn of the Borough Hall. In addition, The N.J. Hall of Fame Mobile Museum will also be a part of this year’s festival.
There will also be a Blood Mobile at the event, to serve anyone who wishes to donate blood that day.
