EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.– Tenafly author and art director Mel Hioki will read from his book " The Other Side of the Pond " at the East Rutherford Memorial Library on Sept. 8.

The visit will be part of the library's ongoing Random Acts of Kindness Program .

Hioki is asking that each attendee donate an item from the list on the library website as the book's mission is to end hunger in our communities, he said.

All items will be donated to the Paterson-based CUMAC .

According to the author, "The Other Side of the Pond" is a story about two communities of frogs that share the same pond that is separated by a huge log. Both communities are exactly the same except for one thing: Food.

The Red Frogs have plenty of food to eat while the Polka Dot frogs have almost nothing to eat. How will this hunger problem be solved?

"The story is based on one of my first outreach experiences for my church," Hioki said. "We prepared and served a meal for a soup kitchen that was on one side of the highway. On the other side of the highway was a very nice shopping mall. The big question for the people at the soup kitchen was where they were going to get their next meal? The big question for the people at the shopping mall was what they should buy or where they should eat?"

The event is open to children ages 5-10.

To register, click here , or call the library at (201)-939-3930.

East Rutherford residents will be given priority.
