High is one of roughly 75,000 people in North America, Europe and Australia suffering from the genetic disease. Vertex is a pharmaceutical company that develops medications to help High and others fight the disease.

“I am constantly humbled by the lengths my family and friends go to to ensure that I remain as healthy and positive as possible," High wrote in her application essay.

"College is definitely the next major step of my life. I hope that I will make friends who support me in all aspects of my life including CF, be able to take advantage of opportunities such as learning from renowned professors, and enjoy my college experience.”

High's scholarship will help her attend Columbia next where she plans on studying history.
