Garrett, a former Rutherford High School football player, turns 86 today.

A football player, coach and scout, Garret was born June 19, 1930. He starred as a fullback and linebacker for Rutherford High School from 1944-48 and as a running back playing college football at Utah State University.

He began coaching at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Lehigh University and found success as head coach at Susquehanna University (1960-65), leading its football team to a 39–11–1 record, which included undefeated seasons in 1961 and 1962. He spent the majority of the next 40 years in the NFL as an assistant coach with the New York Giants (1970-73), New Orleans Saints (1976-77) and Cleveland Browns (1978-84), as well as serving as head coach of the Houston Texans of the World Football League (1974).

From 1987 to 2004, he served as a scout for the Dallas Cowboys. In 1996, Garrett was inducted into Rutherford High School's Athletic Hall of Fame.
