RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The people who visit the Rutherford Food Pantry range from families in need to the individual who needs something to eat.

The Rutherford Community Pantry is a joint effort of community faith congregations, organizations, and concerned citizens. The pantry appreciates and needs your support. Their prime mission is to maintain services to keep our visitors free from hunger. They work hard to maintain each individual’s dignity by offering choices for personal needs as well. To date, they have 174 households registered for pantry services. This totals 365 persons.

Currently, the pantry, in the basement of the Rutherford Borough Hall, 176 Park Ave., is in need of food items in order to fill the overwhelming need and for Thanksgiving and are asking the public to chip in with everything from soup to laundry detergent.

Items needed include the following:

• Hearty soups, turkey stock

• Canned tomatoes

• Canned beans (black, kidney, cannellini)

• Instant mashed potatoes

• Canned potatoes

• Rice and pasta sides

• White Rice

• Crackers

• Cookies

• Tea, coffee and hot chocolate

• Canned apple pie mix, aluminum pie plates and pie crust mix

• Stuffing

• Applesauce

• Dish detergent, laundry detergent and toothpaste.

The pantry has an abundance of the following items and do not need them at this time: Pasta of any kind including lasagna, shells and manicotti; canned green beans, carrots and peas; Cheerios; tomato soup, cranberry sauce, and matzos.

The pantry can't accept out of date items. Donations of food or personal hygiene items may be dropped off at the pantry during the hours of operation. For larger donations, call the pantry to arrange a drop-off time. The pantry also gratefully accept tax-deductible monetary donations.
