RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Officials from the Health Department and the Department of Public Works are reminding residents not to dispose of leaves, branches, or other vegetative matter onto sidewalks or the streets.

Depositing leaves or other waste into the street can result in a fine up to $1,000 and an appearance in municipal court.

The DPW picks up leaves and other vegetative every other Wednesday, with the following rules::

  • The leaves are placed in biodegradable (not plastic) bags or containers
  • The containers are placed at the curb
  • Each container must weigh no more than 50 pounds
  • Brush and tree branches must also be placed in biodegradable containers, or be cut up to no more than 4-feet long and bundled together.

Residents can also dispose of the waste at the DPW facility on the east end of Highland Cross on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For more information, call the DPW on weekdays at 201-460-3040 or go to the Borough’s website.
