RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Rev. Msgr. James O. Sheerin, 85, of Rutherford, died Thursday, Oct. 15.
He was born in Jersey City to the late Owen and Mary (neé) Maloney Sheerin. He was a graduate of Seton Hall Prep, Seton Hall University, Immaculate Conception Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood in May 1956 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark.
Sheerin entered the U.S. Air Force as a Catholic chaplain in January 1963 and retired from service Aug. 1, 1988, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. During his 25-year military career, he served at air force bases throughout the United States and the world, receiving many meritorious service medals, including the Vietnam Service Medal. He served at various parishes until his retirement as pastor of the Church of St. Margaret of Cortona in Little Ferry.
Upon his retirement, he moved to St. John Vianney Residence in Rutherford and Toms River.
He was the brother of two siblings and uncle to four nieces.
Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Margaret of Cortona Roman Catholic Church, 31 Chamberlain Ave., Little Ferry, followed by a vigil Mass at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
Arrangements are under the supervision of the Macagna-Diffily-Onorato Funeral Home, 41 Ames Ave., Rutherford.
