15 Years Before Parole For Paterson Sex Offender Who Abused Boys

PATERSON, N.J. – A registered sex offender who admitted videotaping himself sexually abusing three boys between the ages of 13 and 15 while he was on parole will spend at least 15 years in prison before he is eligible for parole under a plea deal with prosecutors.

Steven Brown pleaded guilty in court in Paterson to a trio of sexual assault and endangerment charges in exchange for a 25-year sentence as part of a bargain with prosecutors that denies him parole eligibility for 15.

Brown, 41, also must register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law and remain on parole supervision for life, under the arrangement. He must also undergo a sex offender evaluation at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel.

New Jersey State Police raided Brown’s Paterson home in 2012 and seized several computers and electronic devices, Passaic County Prosecutor Camela Valdes said Wednesday.

On the computers, detectives found “multiple videos of Steven Brown engaging in sexual acts with young males,” she said.

The assaults occurred “at different locations within Passaic, Union and Middlesex counties,” Valdes said.

“One of the [boys] was initially identified by the police,” she said, “and another male came forward to authorities shortly thereafter.”

A third later came forward after Brown was charged with sexually assaulting the other two in April 2013, Valdes said.

A judge scheduled sentencing for June 23.
