CARLSTADT, N.J. -- Carlstadt joined the growing trend of communities nationwide showing support for local police by painting a blue line down Hackensack Street.
"Law enforcement is not the enemy anywhere," officials said in a statement. "They make a difference in life every day as do other first responders. They keep us safe.
"So please keep them in your thoughts."
Dating back decades, the "thin blue line" is used throughout the U.S. and Canada to symbolize the thin line between chaos and order.
It is used, as well, to commemorate fallen law enforcement officers and to represent the shared commitment of all of them to protecting the public.
Citizens last year begun using it in curb strips outside their homes and stores, while towns have been painting lines down important thoroughfares to show police that they have their backs.
