A passing driver called 911 when they spotted the woman climbing the fence on the East Rutherford side of the overpass on Sunday, Chief Thomas Nielsen said.

"She was grasping the overpass fence and crying," the chief said. "[She] appeared to be distracted by the overhead lights of our patrol vehicles."

Officer William Pangaro spoke to her about why she wanted to hurt herself and was eventually successful in convincing her not to jump, Nielsen said.

Officer James Winand and Sgt. Craig Capuano of the Rutherford Police Department assisted the woman off the ledge, the chief said.

The woman was turned over the the East Rutherford Police Department and brought to headquarters, Nielsen said.
