Cliffside Park HS Teacher's Controversial 'Speak American' Clip Goes Viral

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. -- A short video clip in which a Cliffside Park High School teacher appears to tell students they shouldn't speak Spanish went viral Friday.

The teacher apparently made the remarks after she asked students whispering in Spanish to stop while she was substituting for another teacher.

A student walks out during the 25-second clip, in which the teacher is heard saying:

"[M]en and women are fighting. They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish," the teacher is heard saying. "They are fighting for your right to speak American.”

“You’re being racist,” the student says. “I know how to speak English.”

The CPHS English teacher apparently made the remarks after she asked students whispering in Spanish to stop while she was covering for another teacher.

The school principal held an assembly to discuss the matter with students on Friday.

By then, comments on both sides began flooding Facebook and Twitter.
