Detectives Steven Farrell and Samuel Arnowitz were on patrol at 1:50 p.m. Thursday when they approached a suspicious-looking vehicle at Jewett and Madison avenues and smalled marijuana, Detective Sgt. Robert Anderson said.

A search of the boy turned up a small amount of marijuana intended for sale and a Walther 7.65mm semi-automatic pistol, he said.

He was taken to the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center pending a hearing in the Family Division of Superior Court in Paterson.

Police released a 19-year-old woman who was with him, he said.
