YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: East Rutherford police, with help from their Hasbrouck Heights counterparts, late this afternoon arrested an ex-con who they said dropped a handgun this morning while officers were chasing him and another man.

East Rutherford police got the initial call 6:55 this morning to check for two suspicious men in the John Street area, Chief Lawrence Minda told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .

They went to the scene with officers from Wallington and Rutherford, the chief said.

Both men spotted the officers and took off, with one of them dropping what turned out to be an unloaded .357 handgun reported stolen out of Pennsylvania, Minda said.

Police almost immediately grabbed one of the two, 28-year-old Serafim Fernandes of Lodi ( ABOVE, RIGHT ). He was charged with criminal trespass, the chief said.

The search then was on for the other man.

During that time, Minda said, police went to the McKenzie School two blocks away and put it into lockdown while staying there.

Detectives identified the second man as Jared Stun, 34, of Hasbrouck Heights.

Stun was arrested at his home by officers from East Rutherford and Hasbrouck Heights, the chief said.

They charged him with criminal trespassing, receiving stolen property and weapons offenses.

Jared Joseph Stun, who was being held Monday night on $30,000 at the Bergen County Jail, recently served time for a variety of convictions involving drugs and burglary. His adult criminal record stretches back more than a decade across several municipalities, including Fair Lawn, Hasbrouck Heights and Lodi.

He also spent time in prison for a parole violation in the mid-2000s, records show.
