No injuries were reported in the blaze, which broke out around 3:25 a.m. in the attic over the VIP section of the Balcony on Broad Street, responders said.

The restaurant/catering hall had closed for the night following a Fourth of July party a little over a half-hour earlier, they said.

A Carlstadt ladder hose doused the blaze while firefighters braved flames blowing through the roof of the historic building, which dates back to 1869.

The fire was knocked down in about a half hour.

Twenty or so companies responded. A Lodi ladder truck broke down on the way.
