"We were setting up cameras at Acme and Saddle Brook police called us and said a brown dog was trapped in their yard on Caldwell Avenue," owner Trish Geer said.

"We flew over there and he was there -- scared and smelly like a skunk, but he was there!" said Geer, who's being married Saturday to George Dittus.

Friends and strangers shared posts and messages on Facebook that included reported sightings and pleas to nearby towns -- among them, Garfield, Elmwood Park, Lodi, Fair Lawn and Rochelle Park -- after Boof went missing on Tuesday.

Saddle Brook Police Sgt. Douglas Habermann also promised to spread the word to his colleagues and others.

So it was fitting that Habermann called Geer.

"This is why I took this job, to help people," he said. "Even doing things in the smallest of ways can be huge.

"When I came in to work [Wednesday], I showed the pic to my whole squad and told them to keep their eyes open and let me know if they see him," Habermann said. "When the lady called tonight, I sent a car and immediately called Trish. Just had a feeling it was Boof." A brown boxer mix with a white stripe, Boof was reported seen on Caldwell Avenue near Franklin School -- which is also near Route 46, raising fears that he might have wandered onto the highway.

There was also a sighting at 4 a.m. Wednesday near the Acme supermarket on Mayhill Street, which is why Geer wanted to set up surveillance there.
