Responding Officers Brian Porco, Daniel Drazek and Mariggi Lopez found the unresponsive victim on his back in the street having difficulty breathing, Capt. Darren Sucorowski said Friday.
After determining that he may have taken opiates, the officers administered Narcan and did rescue breathing until EMS arrived, Sucorowski said.
“As they placed [him] in the ambulance he began to regain consciousness,” the captain said.
He was taken to an area hospital, Sucorowski said.
Since they, began carrying Narcan in October 2014, Garfield police have used it 29 times, the captain said.
Chief Raymond Kovach emphasized the importance of calling the police immediately when there's the possibility that an overdose has occurred without fear of being arrested.
New Jersey’s Overdose Prevention Act protects them from prosecution if they call, he said.
