Moonachie Police: One Teterboro Arrest Away From Tying Last Year's Total

MOONACHIE, N.J. -- One more arrest out of Teterboro, and Moonachie police will have the dubious distinction of matching last year's total for the tiny borough with the big-box stores -- in less than eight months.

Officers on Wednesday arrested 48-year-old Joseph Mangino after security officers at Walmart grabbed him trying to walk out with nearly $100 worth of merchandise -- including two blocks of cheese, Detective Sgt. Anthony Fugnitti said Thursday.

He also had an RCA tablet, a can of Red Bull and a wall charger, Fugnitti said.

Mangino -- who was responsible for the department's 44th arrest out of Teterboro this year -- was released on a court summons.

Before Walmart and Costco opened in Teterboro, Moonachie police averaged seven to 14 arrests a year out of the southern end of the tiny borough. Staffing is a huge issue, all agree.
