The three adults and a 15-year-old boy were “casing the area for potential victims” when they cornered the boys by a gate and stole their phones outside Public School #16 on 22nd Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.

One of the adults “grabbed his waistband, leading the victims to believe that he was armed,” he said.

Detective Cindy Carrera investigated, leading to the arrests of the adults – identified as Malik Patterson, 20, and Star Lowder, 19, both of Paterson, and 18-year-old Zamair Cooper of Princeton.

The adults were charged with robbery, conspiracy and using a minor to commit the crime and the boy, who was issued a delinquency complaint for robbery and conspiracy,

All were released pending hearings.
