CLIFFVIEW PILOT SCOOP: Port Authority police tonight said they found 20 bogus temporary license plates and several EZ Pass transponders in the SUV of a Nassau County man who blew through a Holland Tunnel toll booth without paying.
Leonid Khmel, 36, a native of the Ukraine who lives in Lynbrook, triggered the “no toll” signal at the booths around 6:30 p.m., the authority’s Al Della Fave told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
Officers David Narveaz and Matthew Smith stopped Khmel and said they found that he’d altered the paper registration under the rear windshield.
They eventually issued him summons for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle with fictitious registration and improper license plate display.
After impounding his vehicle, officer found 20 fictitious, expired registration papers “in-between the seats, under the seats, behind the seats,” Della Fave told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
They also found at least three transponders, he said.
Authority investigators are checking with EZ Pass to determine where the transponders came from, which could lead to more serious complaints against Khmel, Della Fave said.
