WESTWOOD, N.J. -- A pregnant woman chased down and stopped a 75-year-old driver whose car had just struck her and two of her friends, dragging one of them, witnesses told Daily Voice.

The women had been at the Farmhouse Cafe & Eatery and were crossing Westwood Avenue in the crosswalk, carrying books, from the area of the Starbucks shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Seconds later, a black Honda Civic coming from 'Five Corners' toward Broadway hit all three, Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said.

The 33-year-old pregnant woman, who lives across the street, was clipped by the front fender and knocked down.

Both of her companions -- one 29, the other 38 -- took the brunt of the impact.

The Jersey Shore driver kept going, dragging the younger woman more than 100 feet, witnesses said.

The pregnant woman, although knocked down, "had the presence of mind to get up and yell at the woman to stop," a close family friend told Daily Voice. "She then ran down the street and turned the engine off."

Both of the other women were knocked out temporarily, she said. All were brought to Hackensack University Medical Center.

And although they "got banged up pretty good," none had any broken bones, said Regino, the police chief.

"It really is a miracle that no one was killed," he told Daily Voice.

The dragged woman and her 38-year-old companion were released from the hospital around 1 a.m., the family friend said.

The pregnant victim was released around 3 a.m., she said.

Police, after speaking with a 53-year-old witness, issued two summonses to the Wall Township driver -- for careless driving and failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

"She apparently didn't see them," Regino said.

"That could change, however, depending on what the investigation determines," the chief emphasized. "Detectives are looking for other witnesses and area surveillance video."

Regino asked that anyone who saw the crash or has surveillance video of it contact Westwood police: (201) 664-7000.
