Investigators are assembling details of the various incidents to try and determine who was responsible.
It began with the report of a wallet and GPS stolen from an unlocked 2007 Toyota parked yesterday in the driveway of a Chestnut Street resident who told police a mountain bike was taken, as well, Rutherford Police Capt. Patrick A. Feliciano said.
It included another report, this one from a resident on Ayer Place, called police and said a laptop was stolen from her unlocked 2003 Chevrolet.
Another incident occurred on Washington Avenue, where a resident said he went outside after noticing the interior light of his 2006 Mercedes Benz on – and found a man pulling on the door handles of a Toyota SUV parked next door.
The bandit was white, in early 20s, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, the resident said. He also “had a flash light which he used to look inside the vehicle, then rode away on a mountain bike and headed east toward Erie Avenue,” Feliciano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
He apparently returned.
Dispatched to look into the Washington Avenue Toyota break-in, Officer Robert Buell found the vehicle on Maple Street with its driver door ajar, Feliciano said.
The owner was found and told police a rifle was stolen from the vehicle, the captain said.
Officers canvassed the neighborhood while the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification collected fingerprints and other evidence. Alerts went out to area police agencies.
A short time later, a resident of Maple Street reported that her 2003 Corolla had been stolen.
Police were investigating.
