Rutherford police arrest ex-con in burglary video

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Goes to show the value of surveillance cameras: In no time, Rutherford police caught a man they said was in the middle of a burglary when he was interrupted by the homeowners.

A surveillance video shows Deran Scott Stenborg carrying a book as he rang the bell and knocked on the front door of the home just before 2 o’clock Monday. After getting no response, he tried the doorknob, then walked around to the back, where he forced open the rear door with his hip.

He was removing removing prescription medications from a kitchen cabinet when the homeowners interrupted him, then took off out the front door and fled on foot toward Park Avenue, police said.

After seeing the images, a confidential source contacted Rutherford police with Stenborg’s name, Detective Michael Garner told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

The Bergen County Office of State Parole provided an address for an associate of his (Stenborg was released from state prison last September), Garner said.

Stenborg was wearing the same clothing as in the video when Rutherford police arrested him yesterday afternoon, the detective said. They also recovered some of the jewelry stolen in Monday’s break-in, he said.

Stenborg was being held on $10,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with burglary and criminal mischief.
