Nicholas DeVenio, 31, of Paterson, “was quickly identified within minutes of his picture being posted” in an alert following yesterday morning’s break-in on Hobart Avenue, Rutherford Police Chief John Russo said.
A tipster told police DeVenio “may be attending a wedding somewhere near Cape May,” he said.
Cape May police then arrested him on a warrant around 1 a.m., said Russo, whose officers then picked him up, the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
DeVenio was being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail on charges of burglary, possession of burglar tools and criminal mischief. He also was wanted on warrants out of Lyndhurst for improper behavior and Fort Lee for theft.
Police said he broke a small rear-door glass pane, reached in and unlocked the door to get into the burglarized house.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.
Meanwhile, Rutherford Police Detective William Gumbman collected a video from a resident, and a bulletin was broadcast to all area police agencies and to CLIFFVIEW PILOT (SEE: Police search for Rutherford burglar caught on video).
It’s the second time in recent months that a residential surveillance camera in Rutherford helped collar a burglary suspect. Deran Scott Stenborg was arrested in February after a confidential informant who saw his broadcast image following a break-in called police.
