St. Paddy's Delay: Packed Train Stopped In Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- St. Patrick's Day got off to a boisterous start for NJ Transit and Ridgewood police called to deal with an overcrowded train that was stopped in the village.

Suspects were being taken into custody as the train was cleared.

One rider said the train was "filled with kids dancing in the aisles, drinking and smoking weed."

New Jersey Transits police requested help from village police in removing several of them to wait for the next train, NJT spokeswoman Nancy Snyder told Daily Voice.

""The crew didn't want to proceed further because it was getting over-crowded," Snyder said. "We didn't want to move the train until it was safe to do so."

Police also dealt with one commuter who apparently was smoking a cigarette, Snyder said.

No arrests were made, she said.

Only minor delays were expected.
