EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A Hudson County high school teacher involved in a unique kidney exchange that saved his father's life was busted at his East Rutherford apartment with cocaine and pot for sale, local authorities said.

Kenneth Furlong, 24, who teaches at Memorial High School in West New York, surrendered to borough police with his attorney on Monday after detectives searched his Monarch Apartments home on Schindler Court East and found the drugs, Police Chief Dennis Rivelli said.

Furlong and his father, also named Kenneth, made history at Hackensack University Medical Center last year.

When he was unable to give a kidney to save his father’s life, the hospital found a donor there, Carlos Ferman.

The younger Furlong – who was busted Monday -- donated a kidney to Ferman’s wife, Debra.

The exchanges among living donors in the same hospital was the first of its kind at HUMC.
