Third synagogue firebombing plot brings more charges

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli confirmed this morning that the 19-year-old man accused of firebombing a Rutherford rabbi’s home and igniting a small arson blaze outside a Paramus synagogue has been charged with a plot to torch a third target — in an incident first disclosed on CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Authorities found materials for a “pre-deployed” device outside the Jewish Community Center (pictured) after questioning Anthony M. Graziano, derailing what likely would have been another attack, two sources with direct knowledge of the case told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“Some good investigative work by the prosecutor’s office, local police, the FBI and the ATF may have prevented further damage — and possibly more serious injuries,” one of sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

At least one additional count was brought against Graziano on Wednesday, a day after detectives from Molinelli’s office officially charged him in connection with the other two incidents.

Following the discovery, Molinelli on Wednesday morning requested a squad of specially trained dogs to search for accelerants within a 10-mile radius of Graziano’s home.

Searches Wednesday and Thursday didn’t find any additional devices or materials, said Bergen County Police Lt. James Giblin, a K9 unit commander who headed the operation.

The radius was chosen because Graziano doesn’t have a car. Authorities allege he made several trips to and from various targets on his bicycle.

“He wasn’t always riding the bike with these devices,” a source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT for the story published Wednesday. “He would hide [them] at the location and then go back later.”

As of 2:45 this afternoon, Graziano remained held on $5 million bail in the Bergen County Jail on charges that include several counts of attempted murder, two of aggravated arson and two of bias intimidation.
