The South Bergen Joint Construction Code Office has been approved in advance of retirements by existing employees to take over the Building Department operations in Carlstadt, East Rutherford, and Rutherford, NorthJersey.com said.

The new department will be open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. five days a week, and will be in East Rutherford, according to NorthJersey.com.

It’s the second joint agreement among the three communities this summer; they have also agreed to buy gas and diesel fuel together, and dispense it out of a fueling center in Rutherford.

Carlstadt will contribute $11,000 toward salaries for the new consolidated department; East Rutherford $29,000 and Rutherford $65,000. They will split the cost of pension contributions, and Rutherford alone will pay for health insurance, NorthJersey.com said.

Auditing will be performed annually to be sure costs are allocated fairly, based on usage, according to NorthJersey.com.

Rutherford has been using an interim construction official since July 2014, in anticipation of the retirement of their long-time building inspector last February, NorthJersey.com reported.
