The Rutherford Board of Education approved restructuring the district, effective for the 2016-17 school year.
“We are getting to work now to get all of the details done by next September,” Schools Supt. Jack Hurley said. Union School will be converted into a middle school for grades seven and eight. The remaining Washington, Lincoln and Pierrepont schools will house grades one through six.
A roundtable discussion was held for the public on Sept. 29 at the high school to present the middle school concept and get feedback.
“I absolutely think this will be a wonderful opportunity for the district,” Hurley said.
