ORADELL, N.J. — Two-time wrestling state champion Shane Griffith won his first match by fall at the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions in Atlantic City Friday.

But the 152-pounder and Stanford commit says the tougher rounds have yet to come.

"Any time you get a win you should feel proud of yourself," said Griffith of Westwood, seeded No. 2 in his weight class.

But there's always room to improve.

The junior is among the 10 Bergen Catholic wrestlers in this year's tournament. His team is going four years strong as New Jersey State Champions. All-star grappler Nick Suriano capped his undefeated high school career with his fourth state championship last year.

Griffith of Westwood is on track to face Hasbrouck Heights' Michael O'Malley in the semi-finals, who he beat twice this season. If he wins that, he'll could face Bound Brook's Stephan Glasgow, one of his two losses this season.

"I'll try to focus on what I messed up in — not being so offensive, laying back and not keeping pace," Griffith said.

He's not too worried about it.

"I'm more excited," Griffith said. "I live for the moment."
