It's Everyone's Birthday At Carlstadt Library

CARLSTADT, N.J. — Birthdays don't have to come just once a year in Carlstadt.

The William E. Dermody Public Library will host an "Unbirthday" party at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17.

The idea comes from "Alice in Wonderland," according to children's librarian Erin Hughes. In the story, the Mad Hatter throws such a party to celebrate the many days that aren't the anniversary of one's birth. It even came with its own song.

The event will feature cake, juice boxes and "Alice in Wonderland" crafts. Attendees will also watch the original movie.

"Basically it's an excuse to fill kids with sugar," Hughes said.

This will be the library's first Unbirthday party. It is one of the ideas Hughes brought with her when she joined the staff in April.

Hughes expects 20 to 50 youngsters. Children from Wood-Ridge and East Rutherford are also invited: Activities at their hometown youth library sections are limited by renovation work.

"The more the merrier is kind of how we feel," Hughes said. "I think they're going to love it. It's going to be really simple and really fun and [kids] respond well to that."
