RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- It’s hard to resist the summertime combo of sipping and noshing outdoors. All you need is some sun (or shade) and your choice of a secluded patio, sidewalk seating or a rooftop deck -- and someone else doing the cooking, cleaning and serving.

Café Matisse, Rutherford

Why It's Outdoor Worthy: The upscale café, although it's a new American cuisine and not a French restaurant, is aptly named after French painter and sculpture Henri Matisse, known for his use of color and fluidity of draftsmanship. Its Moroccan style décor and raspberry red walls carry the exotic vibe out into a secret garden filled with trees, flowers and other plantings. Patrons have described the downtown hideaway as lush, enchanting, romantic and thoroughly capable of making them feel like they’re dining in in high style somewhere in Europe.
