North Bergen High School Bruins stripped of football title

Montclair High School was named 2011 football champs of their group today after North Bergen High School was stripped of its title for what the executive committee of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association said were arrangements made for two players to live at a cut rate in apartments owned by cancer-stricken former coach Vincent Ascolese.

The 24-0 vote followed a closed session that reportedly lasted about a half hour.

The two players — one from the Bronx and the other from Paulsboro — lived in Ascolese apartments at below-market rates, the NJIAA said.

The punishment followed consideration by the league to put the Bruins on probation for two years and have school athletic officials attend eligibility hearings.

However, the Montclair Mounties — who lost the North 1, Group 4 title game to NBHS in December — appealed.

Ascolese, second only in popularity to venerated Coach Joe Coviello in North Bergen High School history, is undergoing cancer treatments and didn’t participate in the hearing in Robbinsville.
