Teachers having sex with students: Why?

EDITORIAL: After the arrest of a male teacher accused of sexting with a 16-year-old student at Becton Regional High School, I found web sites that list crime after crime, incident after incident, involving supposedly grown-up instructors and their teenaged charges. What I want to know is why?

Someone, anyone, please give me a cogent, thought-out theory, and I will come to any of your classes and talk about journalism.

A married math teacher at Becton in East Rutherford was arrested for “sexting” a 16-year-old student and exchanging inappropriate photos of each other, among other acts, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

But there are so many more stories throughout the country. Go to: TeacherCrime.com for a breakout of some of the most heinous cases, including one teacher who was getting it online with a detective posing as a 13-year-old, and another sleaze who molested at least 9 girls in 20 years at a middle school.

Another site, TeacherNews.com, has a separate scandal page, to which readers contribute incidents from around the country. It even boasts a map, showing the towns where the various indiscretions occurred.

According to TeacherNews, there were 464 “scandals” last year, a drop from the 478 reported in 2008. For this January alone, there have been nearly SIXTY.

The question is WHY? Is there a particular subculture that grows in a school building? Is it total ignorance of what the law says, versus what the hormones demand? Are we talking about people in denial, or those with serious issues?

In case anyone is wondering where the legal lines are drawn: It’s still rape

One of the amazing upshots to the Becton case have been the number of people (teens, most likely) who have come to the teacher’s defense, branding the girl a slut and saying the 16-year-old evily seduced a 29-year-old married man who had what had been, until that point, a solid job. If that doesn’t speak to a particular culture, I don’t know what does.

I’ve tried to research it. But I want to hear it from people I’m closest to, people I respect and admire. You know who you are. You could use a fake name, A.M. Or you, E.S. I don’t care.

I just want to get an idea of what drives so many people to do this.

You could comment here on this page, write to cliffviewpilot@gmail.com, or write directly to me at gerardjdemarco@gmail.com. If you want to let me know who you are but you don’t want your name used, that’s fine. It increases the credibility for me, knowing the source. No one else needs to know, though. It isn’t germaine to the discussion.

Share your wisdom. Your experience. Your perspective. This is something I truly don’t understand, yet it seems to be happening more and more. And while people talk about the vulnerability of the children, I can’t help question the maturity of the so-called adults.
