The bandit entered the M & T Bank around 9:50 a.m. and said "this is a robbery" and said he would hurt the employees if they didn't give him cash, Capt. Laurence Martin said.

He was described as 30 to 35 years old, around 6 feet tall, with a thin build and wearing a white button-down shirt, green military-style jacket, blue jeans and white sneakers.

George Washington Middle School went into a shelter-in-place for around an hour, Martin said.

The FBI and Passaic County Sheriff's Office helped investigate, the captain said.

Anyone with information about the incident can call Wayne police at (973) 633-3530.
